CNIB Baker Applied Research Fund

Overview:

The CNIB Baker Applied Research Fund supports research that is focused on the social, educational, cultural and rehabilitative needs of Canadians living with vision loss, and the application of assistive devices to meet these needs.
This program is intended both to advance the career development of new investigators, and to encourage senior researchers to develop programs of applied research. Proposals are invited from both.

Amount of Award:

Grants are for a one-year period, with a limit of $35000. Projects must be completed within 12 months. Funds that are unused after 24 months after the start up of the grant must be returned unless a special request for continuance is approved. Equipment costs will not generally be covered, but in certain circumstances equipment may be funded on the basis of matching funds from the host facility. Travel and publications costs should not exceed $2,000.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be residents of Canada and research must be conducted primarily in Canada.

Applications must include documentation of ethical approval from the parent institution (e.g. university or hospital). Grant funding will not be released without this documentation.
The applicant must:
  • Have an academic appointment at a Canadian university, or
  • Occupy a supervisory position at a health care facility, or vision rehab facility
  • All applications will be evaluated with regard to the following criteria:
  • Excellence in the health and social sciences as applied to vision care;
  • Feasibility of research results translating into improved interventions, programs, and services for Canadians living with vision loss;
  • Enhancement of Canada's outstanding research into the needs of Canadians living with vision loss; and
  • Creation of training opportunities for students and service providers.

Reporting:

The investigator will provide CNIB with a progress report six months following the start up of the grant. A second report including a copy of relevant findings of the research is required at the end of the research and prior to releasing the final quarterly payment.
All publications and presentations of this research must acknowledge the support of the CNIB Baker New Researcher Fund.

Deadlines:

Applicants must apply online no later than January 15 of each year. The application will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary review committee, and decisions will be finalized by April 30.
