Accessible Web Design

The Internet has enabled people living with disabilities to lead increasingly independent lives by helping them overcome barriers in the physical world . It can provide new and innovative ways to access information and entertainment, make purchases and communicate without relying on the assistance of other people.

But many websites are not created with accessibility in mind. By excluding the more than 1 in 10 Canadians with a disability, websites that are not accessible fail to reach their full potential audience.

Accessible websites allow ALL Canadians to understand, engage and participate fully in our digital world. They are also faster, easier to use, more stable and help people with older browsers or newer technologies such as mobiles and PDAs.

For assistance in this area, CNIB's Web Accessibility consulting service can help individuals and companies to communicate more clearly: we offer consultations on accessible website design, as well as education and training related to the development of accessible sites.
